Bee Talk with Darren’s Apiary

Ask the Beekeeper 🐝

Welcome to Darren’s Apiary!

Whether you’re a first-time beekeeper, a seasoned apiarist, or simply curious about honey bees, this is your place to ask questions and learn more about these amazing pollinators.

What Can You Ask?

No question is too small. Some common topics include:

  • Starting your first hive
  • Choosing between package bees and nucs
  • Queen bee issues
  • Swarm prevention and capture
  • Varroa mite management
  • Feeding colonies
  • Honey production
  • Bee-friendly plants for North Texas
  • Hive inspections
  • Seasonal management
  • Bee removal and relocation

This Week’s Question

How often should I inspect my hive?

During spring and early summer, most colonies should be inspected every 7–14 days. Regular inspections allow beekeepers to monitor brood patterns, queen performance, food stores, pest levels, and signs of swarming.

Remember: Every time a hive is opened, it disrupts the colony. Inspect with purpose and avoid unnecessary disturbance.
